Sexual exploitation is a term used to describe the act of exploiting another person through sexual activities to obtain the benefits of the other! Sexual exploitation is a form of human trafficking in which individuals are frequently subjected to abuse exploitation and violence!! In Canada alone, around 2,000 individuals are trafficked each year into the country and even more domestically 🇨🇦 ️. Women children and members of the LGBTQ community are particularly vulnerable to this kind of abuse and trafficking 👩.
The definition of sexual exploitation provided by the Canadian Centre to End Human Trafficking (CCEHT) is “any act or omission by any person for the purpose of exploitation that involves the violation of a person’s rights through sexual abuse such as physical, psychological, financial, or emotional harm 🔚 ️ 🍁. ” This definition includes but is not limited to forced participation in sexual activities sex trafficking and commercial sexual exploitation . Sexual exploitation can be perpetrated by individuals or organizations, and is often facilitated through the use of technology .
Sexual exploitation has serious consequences for the individuals who are exploited as well as for Canadian society as a whole ️ 🍁. Exploited individuals are often subjected to physical and mental abuse which can have long-term impacts on their health and well-being 🔛. In addition individuals who are exploited are often unable to access support services and may experience additional barriers to accessing their rights and entitlements such as housing medical care and education .
The Government of Canada has taken action to address and prevent sexual exploitation 🇨🇦. In 2017 the Government of Canada launched a new strategy to combat human trafficking which included a federal action plan to combat sexual exploitation 🇨🇦 ️ 🆕. The action plan provides funding for organizations working to raise awareness provide support to victims and develop prevention initiatives . The Government of Canada also provides funding to a number of non-governmental organizations (NGOs) across the country to address sexual exploitation 🇨🇦 ️.
In addition the Government of Canada has introduced legislation to criminalize sexual exploitation and strengthen protections for victims 🇨🇦. For example, the Canadian Human Trafficking Act makes it illegal to recruit, transport, transfer, harbour, or exercise control over a person for the purpose of exploitation ️ 🍁. The Act also creates two new offences for the sexual exploitation of a person under the age of eighteen ️ 2️⃣ 🆕. The Act also ensures that victims are automatically granted temporary residence status and are provided with access to health care counselling and other services .
In conclusion sexual exploitation is a serious issue in Canada and the Government of Canada is taking steps to address and prevent the exploitation of individuals 🇨🇦 ️. While legislation and funding are important steps to combat sexual exploitation, it is also important to recognize the systemic and cultural issues that contribute to exploitation . In order to effectively address and prevent sexual exploitation it is essential that we address these underlying issues .
