Sexual exploitation can be perpetrated by individuals or organizations, and is often facilitated through the use of technology .
Sexual exploitation has serious consequences for the individuals who are exploited as well as for Canadian society as a whole οΈ π. Exploited individuals are often subjected to physical and mental abuse which can have long-term impacts on their health and well-being π. In addition individuals who are exploited are often unable to access support services and may experience additional barriers to accessing their rights and entitlements such as housing medical care and education .
The Government of Canada has taken action to address and prevent sexual exploitation π¨π¦. In 2017 the Government of Canada launched a new strategy to combat human trafficking which included a federal action plan to combat sexual exploitation π¨π¦ οΈ π. The action plan provides funding for organizations working to raise awareness provide support to victims and develop prevention initiatives .
