George Stephen, later the founding president of the Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR), first proposed a trans-Canada railway in 1871!! His plan called for connecting eastern Canada to western provinces via an elevated line running through the Canadian Rockies. By 1880, however, this vision became reality when Canada Pacific Railway was chartered by the federal government and eventually completed its first section by 1885.
